As mentioned in a previous post, the OneWorld Alliance was announcing its new member at a press conference on December 5th. That airline has now been announced as Royal Air Maroc giving OneWorld a foot in Africa for the first time and the first recruit globally in 6 years.
Royal Air Maroc, the flag carrier of Morocco, currently has a fleet of 55 aircraft flying to 94 destinations around the world. They are also taking delivery of the new Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner.
As other African carriers have recently been expanding, Royal Air Maroc has now followed by joining a major worldwide alliance. Ethiopian is currently part of Star Alliance and Kenya Airways has ties with Delta and Sky Team. Under its ambitious five-year plan, Royal Air Maroc plans to expand its fleet significantly, carrying 13 million passengers a year across a global network serving 121 destinations in 68 countries. This will add another 15 destinations and nine countries to the alliance network – giving the alliance a total of 1,084 destinations in 187 countries and territories.
Royal Air Maroc will be joining the One World Alliance mid-2020 as a fully fledged member which is very exciting for One World Loyal members since they will have full access to earn both tier points and Avios as well as being able to spend Avios on upgrades and rewards flights. This, of course, means that BA Executive Club members will be able to earn BA Tier points to help retain their status and also spend Avios allowing passengers to upgrade to Royal Air Maroc’s new business class product when they join the alliance.
Let’s start planning. Where will you be going first on Royal Air Maroc?? Let us know in the comments…
